Theater programs are designed for those who aspire to a life in the performing arts. There are numerous good programs for theater offered in various colleges around the US and Canada. With drive, determination, and talent, practically anyone can qualify to earn a degree in theater.
Programs for theater can range from Acting Programs to Theater Administration to Technical Theater. Think about what type of role you would like to play in the performing arts. Do you see yourself learning to be an actor or actress, or are you leaning more towards the backstage area? Theater programs can offer concentrations in costume design and construction, dance, musical theater, lighting design, set design, directing–the list goes on and on! It’s up to you to decide where your theater education will take you.
Associate of Arts Degrees in Theater are considered to be a good, basic foundation in the dramatic arts. If you want to learn to act, this would be an excellent first step. With two years of study, you will learn what it takes to work in a professional theater, including basic theater terminology, the various genres of performing arts, and how to audition for shows. Theater degrees at the Associate (AA) level are a good step up to advanced theater training, too.
The next step is to enroll in a theater school that offers a Bachelor Degree (BA) in Performing Arts. At this level, you will be able to choose one or more specialties, such as Acting and Directing, for instance. You may practice writing plays and do script investigation. Theater degrees at the BA level will allow you to experience the rehearsal and performance processes from an insider’s perspective, and hone your skills and techniques.
Later on, you may want to enroll in a graduate degree program for theater, such as the Master Degree in Performing Arts (MA) and the Doctorate Degree (PhD). Those who are interested in teaching dramatic arts, or entering the profession of Artistic Director or Theater Administration (such as learning to be a box office manager or house manager), should definitely investigate graduate degree programs.
