2007 Trends In Comet - Asteroid And Meteor Earth Defense

Science Fiction Authors have long sense written about a Comet, Asteroid or giant Meteorite hitting the Earth. Many Paleontologists believe such an event may have wiped out the Dinosaurs. Indeed, even Hollywood has used these genres in such blockbuster movies as Armageddon and Comet. Carl Sagan, Arthur C. Clarke, Ben Bova, Isaac Asimov along with others have written about the potential eventuality.
The United States of America and other nations actually have disaster plans to put into motion rescue and re-building efforts for our civilization in the event of such a catastrophic event in our present period. And we are not the only nation who has done this. In fact recently Steven Hawkins warns that mankind needs to go colonize other planets in order to insure survival of the species just in case. He is not alone in the scientific community in his comments.
What are the chances of a large near Earth object hitting our pale blue dot and changing the way we live forever? Well, the chances of an object of a large size hitting the Earth are 100%; the question is not if, but rather when? This is why NASA and other Space Agencies around the Globe now track near Earth Objects as they move thru our solar system and as they fly by.
Many leading edge thinkers now believe that it will soon be possible to deflect, eliminate or even capture Comets, Large Meteors or Giant Asteroids depending on the necessity and what they are made of. If captured they maybe able to be mined or used for another purpose, if deflected they would change their orbits into tracks pre-computed to never be an issue for Earth again. Perhaps this article is of interest to propel thought?
